The Benefits of Luxury Vinyl Tile: Why It May Be Your Best Option

Luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) offer a variety of benefits that make them a popular flooring choice for many homeowners and businesses. Some of the key advantages include:

Durability: LVT is highly resistant to scratches, stains, and wear, making it ideal for high-traffic areas. It’s also water-resistant, which is perfect for kitchens, bathrooms, and basements.

Affordability: Compared to natural stone, hardwood, or ceramic tiles, LVT provides a more affordable option without sacrificing style or performance.

Variety of Styles: LVT comes in a wide range of designs, including realistic looks that mimic wood, stone, or ceramic tiles. You can achieve a high-end look without the associated cost or maintenance.

Easy Maintenance: LVT is easy to clean and maintain. Regular sweeping and occasional mopping are typically all that’s needed to keep it looking new, unlike traditional hardwood or stone that may require more specialized care.

Waterproof: Many luxury vinyl tiles are 100% waterproof, making them an excellent choice for wet areas like bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms.

Key Considerations When Choosing Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT)

When selecting Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) flooring, it’s important to keep the following factors in mind to ensure you choose the best product for your needs:

Durability and Wear Layer
The wear layer is the protective coating on the surface of LVT. A thicker wear layer provides better protection against scratches, scuffs, and stains, making it ideal for high-traffic areas.

Waterproofing
One of the standout features of LVT is its waterproof nature. If you’re installing flooring in moisture-prone areas like kitchens, bathrooms, or basements, make sure to choose a fully waterproof option to avoid warping or damage.

Design and Style
LVT comes in a wide variety of designs, including options that mimic natural materials like hardwood, stone, and ceramic tiles. Consider the overall aesthetic of your space and select a style, texture, and color that complements your interior.

Comfort and Acoustics
LVT tends to be softer and warmer than other flooring options like stone or ceramic tiles. It is also known for its noise-reducing qualities, which can be especially important in multi-level homes or apartments.

Brand Reputation and Warranty
Choose a reputable brand known for quality products and customer service. Ensure the product comes with a solid warranty, which can provide peace of mind about the longevity of your floors.

The Kimminau Floors Unfinished Installation Experience

At Kimminau Floors, we take pride in providing a complete, turn-key hardwood flooring installation that guarantees a smooth, hassle-free experience from start to finish. Here’s a look at our LVT installation process.

Step 1. Consultation(s)

The process starts with an in-depth consultation, where we listen to your vision and guide you in selecting the ideal flooring. This can take place either in your home or at our showroom. We’ll carefully assess all the key factors to ensure we find the perfect flooring solution that fits your style, needs, and space.

Step 2. Delivery & Acclimation

Once you've selected your product and your installation schedule is set, the hardwood will be delivered 7-10 days prior to your scheduled start date. This important step allows the hardwood planks to acclimate to your home’s temperature and humidity levels. While it may seem like a minor detail, proper acclimation is crucial to ensuring your floors perform at their best. Don’t skip this step—it’s essential for a successful installation.

Step 3. Furniture Removal & Protection:

We’ve partnered with trusted professionals who specialize in carefully moving furniture and belongings. They will handle this task quickly and carefully, ensuring everything is protected during the refinishing process.

Step 4. Demolition & Subfloor Preparation

We safely remove old flooring materials like carpet, tile, hardwood, and vinyl, then inspect and prepare the subfloor. We address imperfections and level uneven areas, screw down loose panels, ensuring a clean, stable foundation for your new floors to ensure long-lasting squeak free performance.

Step 5. Floor & Trim Installation

On the scheduled start date, our skilled team will arrive to install your vinyl planks. Once the flooring is complete, we’ll add the essential finishing touch—trim installation, which can be stained or painted to match your desired style.

Step 6. Painting

Our turnkey experience wouldn’t be complete without the coordination of a professional paint crew. They will caulk and paint your new base shoe, adding the perfect finishing touches to your floor installation.

Step 7. Final Clean & Furniture Replacement

Next, we conduct a final clean and quality control review. Our goal is to leave your home as clean, or cleaner, than when we arrived. Once your floor meets our high standards, we will schedule our movers to return all contents to their proper place.

Unfinished Hardwood Flooring Installation FAQs

Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) is a high-quality, versatile flooring option designed to mimic the look of natural materials like hardwood, stone, or ceramic tile while offering superior durability, water resistance, and comfort underfoot. LVT consists of multiple layers, including a wear layer for protection, a design layer for realistic visuals, and a core layer for stability. It’s an ideal choice for both residential and commercial spaces, providing the beauty of traditional flooring materials without the high cost or maintenance requirements.

Yes, Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) is waterproof, making it an excellent choice for areas prone to moisture, such as kitchens, bathrooms, basements, and laundry rooms. Its durable, multi-layer construction prevents water from seeping through, ensuring the floor remains stable and resistant to warping, swelling, or damage. However, while the material itself is waterproof, proper installation is essential to prevent water from getting underneath the flooring.

The lifespan of Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) flooring typically ranges from 15 to 25 years, depending on the product’s quality, the level of foot traffic, and how well it is maintained. High-quality LVT with a durable wear layer can last even longer, especially in residential settings with proper care. Regular cleaning and avoiding harsh chemicals or abrasives will help preserve the floor’s finish and extend its lifespan.

  • Regular Sweeping or Vacuuming: Use a soft-bristle broom or vacuum (without a beater bar) to remove dust and debris.
  • Damp Mopping: Clean with a damp mop and a pH-neutral, non-abrasive cleaner specifically designed for LVT. Avoid harsh chemicals or steam mops, as they can damage the surface.
  • Wipe Spills Quickly: Clean up spills immediately to prevent staining or damage.
  • Protect the Surface: Use felt pads under furniture legs, avoid dragging heavy items, and place mats at entryways to trap dirt.
  • Avoid Abrasive Tools: Do not use scrub brushes, steel wool, or abrasive cleaning pads, as they can scratch the wear layer.
  • Wood-Look Planks: Mimics the natural appearance of hardwood, with realistic grain patterns, textures, and finishes. Available in styles like oak, hickory, and walnut.
  • Stone and Tile Designs: Replicates the look of natural stone, slate, marble, or ceramic tile, offering a durable and low-maintenance alternative.
  • Concrete and Industrial Finishes: Modern and sleek, these patterns create an urban, contemporary feel.
  • Geometric and Decorative Patterns: Options like herringbone, chevron, and parquet add visual interest and sophistication.
  • Custom Designs: Some manufacturers offer the ability to customize patterns; herringbone & chevron patterns for example.
  • LVT vs. Hardwood: LVT typically costs significantly less than solid & engineered hardwood, both in material and installation costs. Usually around 40% less.  However LVT is not renewable and will have to be thrown away and replaced in 15-20 years.
  • LVT vs. Tile: LVT is generally more budget-friendly than ceramic or porcelain tile, and its installation is quicker and less labor-intensive.
  • LVT vs. Carpet: While carpet may have a lower upfront cost, LVT offers better long-term value due to its durability, easy maintenance, and lifespan.
  • LVT vs. Laminate: LVT is often slightly more expensive than laminate, but it provides better water resistance and durability, making it ideal for high-traffic or moisture-prone areas.
