Do we move appliances when refinishing hardwood floors?

Chances are if you look down in front of your fridge that you will see some indentions in the floor caused by the wheels on your refrigerator.

It’s amazing to me that in the twenty-first century, with all of the modern technological advances that appliance manufactures haven’t figured out a way to design refrigerator wheels that won’t leave these impressions in your floor.

In order to have your refinishing project completed correctly, we will need to pull out your fridge, disconnect the waterline and move it across your floor.  There’s no need to take everything out of your fridge, we will keep it plugged in to make sure your food doesn’t go bad.

Why do my appliances need to be pulled out?

If you get a new appliance after your floors are refinished it may have a different depth (counter depth for example).  If you didn’t have the floors sanded underneath the appliance, you will have an ugly line suddenly visible where the old unfinished floor remains.

The Airsled machine allows us to move your appliances without damaging the floor.  Here’s how it works:

  • has two inflatable sleds that slide underneath your appliance

  • inflate the sleds with a small air compressor and this will gently lift your appliance off the floor.

  • The sleds easily glide across the floor and your appliance can be slid into place without those dreaded wheel marks

These machines aren’t cheap but they’re worth every penny.  Professional contractors spend money on professional tools to make sure the job is done correctly.  If the contractor you’re considering doesn’t own an airSled, you may have to consider if they may be skipping out on other important tools as well.

One last consideration, many of our clients will need to slide their fridge out in order to clean behind it.  They may not realize they’re putting these indentions into their floor.  If you don’t have access to an airSled, go to your local hardwood store and grab some thin masonite.  Put it down in front of the appliance before you pull it out.  This will keep these marks from happening.
